Unit Converter / Bytes Converter

The unit converter handles length, weight and temperature with fixed factors (temperature is affine, so it uses formulas). The bytes converter only converts among B, KB, MB, GB and TB, where the real difficulty is choosing between base 1000 and base 1024.

When to use Unit Converter

  • Converting height and weight, screen sizes, room or oven temperatures.
  • Going between inch / ft / lb / oz and metric.
  • Anything involving temperature — the bytes converter does not do it.

When to use Bytes Converter

  • Reading drive, memory or file sizes, and explaining vendor labels versus OS displays.
  • Writing capacity specs that must line up with what the OS reports, which means switching bases.
  • Normalising a pile of values recorded in MB to GB.

Verdict

They do not overlap: capacity and 1000/1024 questions go to the bytes converter, physical quantities to the unit converter. Nearly every "where did my gigabytes go" answer lives in the base choice.
